Halfway through 2009, you say?
Here are the songs I've liked most.

1. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - "Hysteric" (For its balance between caution and attraction)
2. Lily Allen - "The Fear" (Best song 'about' the 09 recession.)
3. VV Brown - "Shark In The Water" (Puts some much-needed funny into quirky)
4. TI ft Justin Timberlake - "Dead And Gone" (For its balance between elegy and urgency)
5. Florence And The Machine - "Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)" (Joseph Campbell meets undergrad amdram)
6. Boy Better Know - "Too Many Men" (Posse cut trapped in a lift)
7. Jordin Sparks - "Battlefield" (Boom, boom, pow.)
8. Fever Ray - "When I Grow Up (Lissvik Remix)" (Pan pipes FTW)
9. Taylor Swift - "You Belong With Me" (C86 Indie emotion meets pop-country sheen)
10. Elektrik Red - "P Is For Power" (Out of the strong came forth sweetness)
11. Morrissey - "Something Is Squeezing My Skull" ("YOU SWORE YOU WOULD NOT!")
12. Kid Cudi ft Crookers - "Day And Nite" (Something is squeezing his skull)
13. Blackout Crew - "Dialled" (Best song about viral marketing!)
14. Timberlee ft Tosh - "Heels" (For its balance between roughneck and Right Said Fred)
15. Kid Bass ft Sincere - "Good Girls Love Rudeboys" (Smash robots do Wiley)
16. Royksopp - "The Girl And The Robot" (Kid Cudi's girlfriend kills time waiting for his shift to finish)
17. K.I.G. - "Heads Shoulders Knees And Toes" (UK Funky expands its fanbase to include my toddler)
18. Cassie ft Diddy - "Must Be Love" (For its balance between smoke and mirrors)
19. Pink Dollaz - "Never Hungry" (So why sound so skeletal?)
20. Cobra Starship ft Leighton Meester - "Good Girls Go Bad" (Rudeboys get the good girls all the time)

There are lots of things I haven't heard, of course.

1. Yes.
2. Mostly yes. Lily's not as clever as she thinks she is and a few touches here irritate.
3. Very yes. All about that chorus, which explodes out of nowhere like the Big Bang, and inspires just the same kind of sock and awe.
4. Not heard it?
5. A world of yes! I still need to find a way to articulate my feelings about this one.
6. Not heard it
7. Somewhat yes - it's absurd and it knows it.
8. Not heard it
9. Very yes! Just pure teen-movie-pop of the most exquisite kind.
10. Not heard it
11. Not heard it
12. Not heard it
13. Yes! It's irritating in just the right way, and anything that includes a rap in the style of a call centre worker featuring the line "have a nice day and thanks for your patience" is clearly one of the Best Things Ever.
14. Not heard it
15. Somewhat yes. No strong feelings about this one really.
16. Um. I listend to it a while back and it evidently left little impression. So maybe a re-listen is in order.
17. Haven't heard it, mortifyingly.
18. Also missed this...
19. ...and this...
10. ...and possibly this, don't remember.

So I'll have to get back to you about the not-heards. Good list, though!

actually I'm only just now seeing what's on your list as opposed to what's off it and I'm just going to go :(((( for a while now. It's all stuff which I expected to be better than it is but not in any way close to actually good stuff. VV Brown? Florence? "They're not awful" is about as close as I get to complimenting them. "Too Many Man" is great but there are at least 20 better grime/funky vocal tracks!

A lot of stuff I know you like is stuff I also like but hasn't really become playlist fixtures for me in the way these are/were. VV and Florence have to be in my top 10, because I can't stop playing them.

Sounds like we need to see your top 20 of 2k9 thus far, then, alex.

I've liked a lot of the grime stuff you've exposed me to this year, so I'd love to see a best-of. Jump on it!

The placings are a lot more subject to change than the songs. It's sort of in the same place "A&E" was last year - a song that I'm aware isn't as amazing as I find it but which I've freighted with a lot of personal stuff.

I like everything, as you know.

You recommend a lot of stuff which is good but I feel would be better if I was going out dancing to it or part of the scene. eg "Inflation", which is fine but just too context-less on its own for me to really care.
